After U.S. Sailing moved its headquarters onto the Roger Williams University campus, the organization’s president asked us to dream up something artful to enliven their bland exterior. The resulting install includes four sails flanking the entrance and a twisting navy blue Ferrari awning over the door. The beauty of this project is the authenticity of its parts, starting with the fir masts (with engineered steel cores), which boast bronze winches and halyards. The sails themselves, sewn from traditional Dacron, attach to the masts via jib hanks on wire. The result is a dynamic fabric art installation that’s eye-catching, functional, and perfectly on-brand.
